What separates consistently booked, streamed, and successful independent musicians from the rest isn’t just better music… it’s better habits. Specifically, the way they use their 24 hours.

If you’ve been wondering what successful indie artists do every day that keeps them progressing while others burn out or stall, we’ve come your way with a failure-proof blueprint.

Here’s a breakdown of the daily routine that top-performing, self-made musicians follow (and how you can apply it starting today).

1. They Start the Day With Intention (Not the Gram)

The first 30 minutes of your day sets the tone. If you’re aiming for the top, do not immediately dive into DMs or compare yourself to others on social media the moment you wake up.

Do these instead:

  • Reflect or journal — even just 5 minutes
  • Set 1–3 goals for the day
  • Do something to connect with their vision (e.g., visualize performing, look at your goals, etc.)

This is mental training. You’re reminding yourself that you’re the CEO of your music career.

2. They Touch Their Craft Daily

Highly successful indie musicians know that consistency > intensity. They don’t wait for “inspiration” to write or rehearse. They treat music like a job they love:

  • 30 mins of vocal warm-ups or beat making
  • Rewriting verses
  • Rehearsing live sets or learning an instrument
  • Reviewing old tracks with a producer’s ear

Fun Fact: Beyonce is reported to work on her craft from 9AM to 11AM daily. This doesn’t have to be your duration. The main point of this is consistency. So even if it’s 30 minutes you can afford, it’s all good.

And if you happen to wear many hats, perhaps because you don’t have a manager yet, this may also include handling business daily. Th

One small creative action daily adds up to massive progress.

 3. They Handle Business Like a Manager Would

This is applicable to you if you’re just starting out and don’t have a manager yet. At this stage, you don’t avoid the business stuff. You actually make time for it.

  • Check emails (bookings, collabs, brand deals)
  • Post or plan content (even batching 3 reels at once)
  • Send follow-ups to promoters or venues
  • Track streams and royalties

Tip: Set a 30-minute “business hour” daily. No distractions. No scrolling. Just handling your career like it’s your business — because it is.

4. They Learn Something New Every Day

Growth-minded artists never stop learning, especially in an industry that moves fast. You don’t need hours of study, just 15–30 mins:

  • Watch interviews with artists you admire
  • Read one blog (like this one 😉)
  • Take a music marketing course or YouTube lesson
  • Join a Discord group or community forum

Actively gaining everyday helps sharpen your edge. Every time you learn, you get more confident and more prepared for the next opportunity.

5. They Engage With Their Audience Authentically

No, you don’t have to dance on TikTok every day. But the most successful indie artists stay connected with their fans consistently.

Be in touch, even if it’s for a short while. Respond to a few DMs or comments – may 3 to Post a quick BTS story or rehearsal clip.Share your thoughts or journey on your stories. And of course, celebrate small wins with your community

6. They Wind Down Intentionally

Even hustlers need rest. Smart indie artists protect their energy so they don’t burn out. They:

  • Avoid last-minute overthinking at night
  • Recap what they accomplished today
  • Mentally clock out — maybe with a podcast, music, or silence

This isn’t fluff. This is how they stay consistent for years, not just months.

Structure Creates Freedom

Success is built in the daily habits no one sees.

The artists who win aren’t just lucky. They’re organized. They’re focused. And they respect their time. If you’re serious about your music career, you don’t need to copy someone’s exact schedule — just commit to showing up daily in these key areas:

Your craft. Your business. Your audience. Your growth. Your rest

Even if you don’t do everything listed everyday, do them on most days than not — unless you’re extremely busy on tours on some other highly time-consuming stuff that actually moves the needle. Such things that mark success — which your daily rituals actually resulted into.

Start small. Build your flow. And remember: your future fans are counting on the version of you that shows up every day.

This is 2025, and there’s one thing we know you don’t have time for: nonsense.

Fake profiles. Delayed payments. Shady distribution processes that make it hard to track your royalties or verify your identity. All these are roadblocks to your growth — not to mention how inconvenient you feel going through the hassle.

This is why we strive daily to build a music distribution platform that puts artists first — and our new partnership with iDenfy is one more way we’re backing that up.

So, what does this partnership mean for you as an artist?

1.Faster, Safer Artist Onboarding

Say bye endless back-and-forth emails. No more wondering if your identity was really verified.

Through our integration with iDenfy, onboarding as a new artist on Highvibes is now faster, simpler, and more secure. No matter where you’re signing up from — Accra, Nairobi, Lagos, London, or Atlanta — your identity gets verified within minutes using advanced AI and biometric tech.

With the new development, we’re making sure you’re the rightful owner of your work. We’re also preventing fake profiles from uploading your music, and ensuring faster approval so you can start earning sooner

2.Protection Means Faster Payouts

Delayed or blocked royalty payments are usually the result of identity issues or unverifiable account info. With iDenfy’s secure KYC (Know Your Customer) process in place, we’re removing those barriers.

What this does mean for you?  Firstly, you can now get paid faster with less friction. Secondly, the days of delays or blocks due to missing documents are over. And lastly, we’re engineering greater trust between you and your fans, collaborators, and playlist curators. In short: fewer hiccups and more peace of mind.

3.Your Identity, Your Control

Scammers and impersonators are getting smarter. Some artists have even seen their unreleased songs uploaded by strangers.

That ends here.

With iDenfy’s verification system backing our platform, every artist on Highvibes is a real, verified creator. That’s good for your reputation — and even better for your future deals, syncs, and collaborations.

Why This Matters Now

Africa’s music scene is booming. But with that growth comes risk. Indie creators typically don’t have the capacity — in terms of legal teams and big budgets — to tackle this challenge head-on.

That’s why our job doesn’t stop at just distributing your music.

We’re building infrastructure that helps you grow, protect, and monetize your career — for the long haul.

Partnering with iDenfy is one step closer to that vision.

We’re excited about what this means for the Highvibes community — but more importantly, what it means for you.

So while you focus on your craft, you shouldn’t be chasing paperwork or worry about imposters uploading your work at the same time.

We’re committed to making your music journey secure, transparent, and built for growth.

Want to learn more about how we’re making distribution smarter and safer? Reach out to our artist support team or explore your dashboard now.

Along this music path, you’re bound to meet people who claim they want to help you succeed. The right mentor can guide you, provide valuable advice, and open doors that help you elevate your career. But just as easily, you could encounter a tormentor disguised as a mentor.

These people might seem like they’re in your corner, but in reality, they’re holding you back, stifling your potential, or even sabotaging your progress.

Understanding the difference between mentors and tormentors is crucial in such a competitive industry.

Here’s how to spot the difference and why it matters.

What is a Mentor?

A true mentor is someone who has your best interests at heart. They are invested in your growth and genuinely want to see you succeed. They offer constructive feedback, share their experiences, and help you navigate the challenges of your career.

In addition to giving you advice, they empower you to make your own decisions and become better at what you do.

Here Are Some Key Traits of a Mentor:

  • Genuine Support: They want to see you grow and thrive, not just benefit from your success.
  • Experience: They’ve been where you are and have the expertise to guide you.
  • Objective Advice: They give you feedback that challenges you to improve, but it’s always in your best interest.
  • Respect for Your Vision: They encourage you to stay true to your artistic identity, not force you into a mold that fits their agenda.

Now Let’s Talk about The Other One: A Tormentor

A tormentor, on the other hand, is someone who may appear to be guiding you, but their actions and advice hold you back. They manipulate your trust and use their position to control or discourage you.

Rather than helping you grow, they try to keep you in a box that benefits them. They do this by limiting your potential, taking advantage of your work, or discouraging you from stepping out on your own.

The Traits that Give Them Away Include:

  • Conditional Support: They only help you if it benefits them. When the relationship stops serving their needs, they pull back or become critical.

  • Lack of Genuine Expertise: They might offer advice that sounds good but lacks real depth, often pushing their personal agenda instead of helping you expand your own.

  • Negative Feedback: They consistently put you down or make you feel small, rather than encouraging you to improve in constructive ways.

  • Control and Manipulation: They try to control your decisions, and instead of respecting your vision, they impose their own goals onto your career.

Now, How Do Spot the Difference?

This is not always easy, especially early on when you’re desperate for guidance. But there are some red flags you can watch out for:

  • They Never Celebrate Your Wins: A mentor will celebrate your successes, no matter how small. A tormentor may downplay or ignore your achievements to keep you feeling insecure.

  • They Discourage Independent Thinking: A true mentor encourages you to think for yourself and make your own decisions. A tormentor might push you into decisions without letting you have a voice.

  • They’re Focused on Their Own Agenda: If the advice always seems to benefit them more than it benefits you, you’re probably dealing with a tormentor.

  • They Keep You Stuck: Mentors help you grow, challenge you, and open doors. Tormentors keep you from reaching your full potential by keeping you stuck in patterns that aren’t serving you.

Discernment is key Skill

Navigating the world of music is tricky, and knowing who to trust with your journey is essential. A true mentor will help you reach new heights, but a tormentor will only leave you stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and missed opportunities. Take the time to evaluate the people around you, and make sure you’re building relationships that truly help you thrive.

If you’re running Spotify ads just so you can earn instant revenue, you’re missing the real value.

The aim of advertising is bigger than that; it’s really about building presence, growing your fanbase, and setting up for long-term success in the music industry. In this blog, we’ll explore how to use Spotify ads strategically, beyond just making money.

Why Spotify Ads Don’t Work as a Cash Machine

If you’ve been wondering why this happens, you’re in the right place to learn.

Here’s the deal: Promoting your song on Spotify might get you a few thousand streams. But in terms of payout? That might earn you $10–$20 max—not even close to covering your ad spend.

But here’s where music promotion actually pays off:

  • 1,000 new listeners
  • 50 new saves
  • 10 new followers
  • A few real fans who stay for the long haul

That’s long-term music career growth. So, it’s much wiser to consistently do this for every release, just so you can build up an audience in a way that’s gradual and sure.

The Real Value: Visibility and Fan Discovery

Most artists miss this, but the biggest return on Spotify ads is attention, not cash.

Spotify lets you target listeners by genre, mood, artist similarity, or even geographic region. That means you’re not just advertising randomly, but showing up for people who are likely to love your sound.

Those listeners may not buy from you today. But they remember you. They follow you. And when they see you again, they’re one step closer to becoming a fan.

Branding Through Ads: Make Them Remember You

Don’t think of ads as just pushing a link. They’re actually your storytelling outlet.

  • What do you sound like?

  • What do you stand for?

  • What vibe do you bring?

When your Spotify ads reflect your artist brand, you build recognition. You go from “that one track I heard” to “that artist I follow.”

Use ad visuals, tone, and language that align with your music identity. That’s how music branding begins—and how you stand out in a crowded market.

Focus on Momentum, Not Just Monetization

If you’re measuring ad success by profit alone, you’re thinking too small. Think bigger:

  • Are more people discovering your music?

  • Are you gaining traction in key regions?

  • Are you becoming recognizable in your niche?

Ads aren’t magic, but when used intentionally, they’re fuel for your momentum.

Spotify advertising is best viewed as a tool for awareness, engagement, and growth—not a quick return investment.

Shift Your Mindset to Win Long-Term

Stop treating ads like a slot machine and start treating them like a stage.

Instead of asking:

“How much money will this ad make?”

Ask:

“How is this ad helping me build the career momentum I want?”

Do not let good thing you want make you lose sight of the great thing you can achieve.

Burnout is often viewed as the enemy of creativity and productivity, which looks right on the surface. But if you think deeper, it can be that catalyst for career boost if you understand how to use it to your advantage.

Here’s why burnout, when managed properly, might just be the fuel you need to take your career to the next level.

1. It Forces You to Reassess Your Priorities

Burnout usually happens when you’re juggling too many things, whether it’s your music, social media, touring, or managing business demands. It’s like a wake-up call, signalling to you that your approach isn’t sustainable.

You hit that wall, and now you’re forced to step back and reflect: What’s working? What’s draining you?

Taking a break can give you the space to prioritize what truly matters for your long-term career, such as focusing on your music, building better systems for your business, or putting more energy into fan relationships.

2. It Pushes You to Establish Boundaries

Being burnt out often stems from not having clear boundaries between work and rest. Whether it’s feeling pressure to always be “on” or neglecting your well-being, this can quickly lead to exhaustion.

Burnout presents you the opportunity to understand that you can’t pour from an empty cup. With proper boundaries, you’ll not only protect your health but also maintain the energy needed to perform at your best, creatively and professionally.

3. It Sparks Creative Breakthroughs

Sometimes, the most creative ideas come when you’re forced to slow down. The constant pressure to produce, perform, and promote can stifle your creativity, but when burnout hits, it creates a moment of pause.

In those moments of stillness, your mind can connect dots that were previously unclear. It might be the breakthrough you need to create that next big hit or to innovate your brand’s identity in a way that feels fresh and exciting.

4. It Teaches You the Importance of Self-Care

The hustle is real, but it’s not sustainable if you don’t take care of yourself. Burnout often teaches the hard way that you can’t keep sacrificing your physical and mental health for your career.

Embracing burnout as a teacher helps you realize that self-care is not optional. Artists who learn to manage their energy, maintain a work-life balance, and prioritize mental health are the ones who last the longest in the industry.

5. It Leads to Better Time Management

When you’re feeling burnt out, the inefficiencies in how you’re spending your time become glaringly obvious. You’ve been wasting time on tasks that don’t move the needle, and overcommitting to projects that aren’t aligned with your goals.  You were blind to these habits, but now, burnout opens your eyes, forcing you to face them head-on.

Once you’ve experienced burnout, you’ll develop better time management skills, focusing on tasks that truly contribute to your growth and delegating or letting go of what doesn’t. This leads to a more focused, productive approach to your career.

6. It Reinforces the Need for a Strong Support System

Burnout often happens when you’re trying to do everything on your own. As an artist, you wear many hats—but that doesn’t mean you should do it all alone. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the demands of your career and life, but burnout can show you the value of having a strong team around you.

Building a support system—whether it’s through collaborators, managers, publicists, or even close friends—will allow you to take a step back when you need it, ensuring you don’t burn out again in the future.

 Don’t Run Away From It

Even if you tried, it is sometimes totally unavoidable. So, next time burnout hits, instead of panicking, take a step back, reflect, and use it as a catalyst for change.

We’ve talked about how much impact the Live Events feature on Spotify for Artists can make in your concert and touring.

But your concert can get even bigger if you’re able to successfully pull off the fear of missing out (FOMO).  Think about it: you now have real-time data to build hype, generate urgency, and make your concerts feel like an exclusive, must-attend event.

So what’s stopping you?

Here’s how you can use data-driven FOMO tactics to pack your shows.

1. Create Pre-Sale Urgency with Real-Time Insights

Because the Live Events feature shows how many fans are discovering and saving your concert,  you can use that urgency to push pre-sales.

Imagine what can happen if you announce that a limited number of pre-sale tickets are available for early buyers. To make this even better, use real numbers. For example, say “500 fans in Lagos have saved this event. Secure your spot now before it sells out!”

Then make it even more explosive with exclusive bonus (e.g., a signed poster, early access to merch) for those who buy early.

2. Make Fans Feel Like VIPs with Exclusive Experiences

FOMO is strongest when fans feel they’re missing out on something special. Intensify this feeling VIP offers.

Start by identifying cities where event saves are skyrocketing and offer exclusive VIP upgrades (meet-and-greets, early access, soundchecks). Then create “Fan Club-Only” sections or special tickets for those who engage most with your music on Spotify. Having done these, promote these limited experiences with countdowns and scarcity messaging (“Only 50 VIP spots available—first come, first served!”).

3. Turn High Discovery Rates into Social Proof

Fans trust other fans. When they see people talking about an event, they don’t want to miss out. Use Spotify’s event discovery data to fuel this momentum.

If your show is trending in a certain city, highlight it: “Thousands of fans in Accra are getting their tickets. Don’t miss out!” Prove it with screenshots of event saves and Spotify’s Live Event data in your social media promotions.

Also, encourage fans who saved your event to share it in their stories for a chance to win free tickets or backstage access.

4. Use Last-Minute FOMO to Push Final Ticket Sales

Even after ticket sales have started, use Spotify’s daily engagement data to keep the hype alive and trigger last-minute buyers.

Send reminders like: “Only 48 hours left to grab tickets before prices go up!” Show live updates: “We just crossed 2,000 ticket sales in Nairobi—act fast before it’s sold out!” Release a final batch of ‘limited tickets’ to make fans rush to buy.

When fans feel like they’re missing out, they act fast. Use this insight, build FOMO, and turn your next concert into a sold-out event.

In the African industry, the trend of music videos becoming as powerful as the music itself arguably began in the mid-2000s with the likes of P-square and Dbanj. Since then, the story hasn’t changed.

A well-crafted music video can take an artist’s career to new heights, making them more mainstream exposure and acceptance. But a few times, we’ve seen attempts to be creative turning into a nightmare: an artist releases a video, and instead of applause, they’re met with outrage. Sometimes, it’s a calculated risk. Other times, it’s an oversight that costs them more than they bargained for.

This brings to mind an important truth—that artistic expression is one thing, and knowing your audience is another. In Africa, where music is deeply intertwined with culture and religion, visuals carry weight beyond entertainment. What an artist sees as creative freedom, others might see as disrespect. And in the age of social media, where reactions spread like wildfire, one wrong move can damage an artist’s reputation, limit their airplay, or even attract legal trouble.

But does this mean artists should play it safe? Not necessarily. Some of the biggest names in music built their careers by challenging norms. However, there’s a difference between being bold and being careless. Understanding the fine line between pushing boundaries and crossing them is important.

So, what’s the takeaway? Be intentional with your visuals. Start by knowing your audience and understanding the cultural context within which you operate.

But then, if you choose to stir controversy, be ready for the consequences—good or bad. Because in the world of music, creativity is power, but how you wield it determines whether you rise or fall.

Everyone looks at Fela Kuti and thinks of activism, Pan-Africanism, and rebellion. But in all the talk about his politics, one often missed is his ability to forge his own path in music.

He pioneered Afrobeat and created an entire ecosystem around it. He refused to be boxed in by expectations or mainstream approval. He made music on his own terms and performed in his own space. If you’re an independent artist today, there’s no better blueprint.

Oh yes we know: you are not as crazy as Fela was. But as mentioned, this is not about the uncompromising activism, but the boldness to do what others aren’t thinking of.

So what are the things you must do?

1. Industry Standards? Break Them.

Fela never played by the rules. He stretched his tracks into 20-minute anthems. While others fine-tuned their music to fit Western tastes, he leaned even deeper into African rhythms, blending traditional percussion with jazz and funk. This made him impossible to ignore.

For today’s independent artists, the message is clear: don’t shrink yourself to fit an industry mold. Make the kind of music that represents you, not what algorithms say will trend. The artists who last are the ones who create something real, not those who chase what’s “hot” for the moment.

2. Build Your Own Stage

Rather than rely on festival bookings or big venues, Fela built his own. His shrine was a movement, a world where he controlled the narrative. He made sure that when people wanted to experience his music fully, they had to come to his turf.

Today, independent artists have more ways than ever to own their platforms. You don’t need approval from major festivals to build your audience. Use social media to create your own virtual stage. Turn your YouTube or Instagram Live into your own Shrine. Whether online or offline, the goal is the same—don’t wait for a stage. Build yours.

3. Own Your Music

If Fela had today’s tools—streaming, digital distribution, direct-to-fan platforms—imagine how much further his independence would have gone. Independent artists today have the power to distribute music globally without middlemen. Platforms like Highvibes Distribution make that possible, putting power back in the hands of artists. The question is, are you ready to claim yours?

The Fela Mindset: Make Them Come to You

Fela never begged for industry validation. He built something so undeniable that the industry had no choice but to acknowledge him. That’s the mindset every independent artist needs. Instead of chasing labels, streams, or viral moments, create something real. Control your music, own your brand, and let the world come to you.

Because if there’s one thing Fela’s journey teaches us, it’s this that the most powerful artists aren’t the ones who follow the path. They’re the ones who create it.
